DBC Members Participate at 2010 NAD Conference
Monday, 12 July 2010

National Association of the Deaf ConferenceMembers of the Deaf Bilingual Coalition attended the National Association of the Deaf's 50th Biennial Conference recently in Philadelphia, PA. The DBC held two presentations on July 7, 2010. John Egbert, Tami Hossler, and David Reynolds were the presenters.

The Workshop presentation was titled "Deaf Babies’ and Children’s Human Rights to ASL and English," The workshop focused on increasing awareness and advocacy efforts in the area of Deaf babies’ and children’s human rights to cognitive, linguistic, and social and emotional development of language through ASL and English bilingualism.

The DBC Seeks...

...to reach out to parents of Deaf children so that they are provided with full, balanced and accurate information on ASL and English language acquisition so that their children can naturally acquire solid linguistic foundations.

The second presentation was a workship titled "Language Begins with Early Detection and Intervention: A Need for Systematic Change." This workshop discussed the impact of early intervention programs on every aspect of a Deaf child’s life and the importance of understanding the issues, concerns and recommendations for change made related to Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI). DBC members discussed the need for collaboration with NAD and other entities to improve the quality of services and programs at the national and state levels, from Deaf professional employment in early intervention programs, to training programs for Deaf mentors, to the development of accurate information to be given to parents and professionals on the topic of bilingualism through ASL and English.
