In August, the Deaf Community in Canada became concerned about an organization known as VOICE that devalued American Sign Language and the culture of the Deaf Community in an open letter posted on their website. A letter writing campaign followed. Below are letters written by the Canadian Hearing Society, Canadian Association of the Deaf, Ontario Association of the Deaf and the Deaf Bilingual Coalition, along with the New Era document fashioned at the ICED Convention at Vancouver in 2010.
We continue to watch and be alert to issues like this one, and we encourage Deaf community organizations, leaders and community members to work together to keep ASL strong. |
