ASL Tales Storytelling Contest
ASL Tales Storytellers’ Contest 2011

Do you love storytelling? We are looking for ASL student storytellers to create their own version of ASL Tales: Rapunzel.

Contest participants have an opportunity to have their work included in the ASL Tales Storytellers’ Collection. All the profits from these DVDs will go to organizations that support bi-lingual education: the Deaf Bilingual Coalition and the American Society for Deaf Children.

Who we are looking for:
Deaf student storytellers

What we are looking for:

  • Your own ASL translation!
  • Entries should consider the meaning of the book, looking beyond the surface English text. Pinky’s video is only one version of how the book can be told in ASL. We are looking for your own creative version of how to tell this story!
  • All of the ideas and elements in the book should be included in your ASL video. You may alter the order of ideas on each page, but the order of the story should match the text on each page. Using the illustrations to supplement the ASL video is optional.
  • Something different than the translation already created by Pinky and Alisha.
  • Your IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY!

NOTE: Adults may give support for understanding the English, and teaching students how Pinky’s version is equivalent to the English text. Actual contest entries must be created by the student.

NOTE: Students may stop as often as they need. Unlike most ASL contests, we are more interested in the effectiveness of the translation as an alternate ASL version of the book than the performance. Contest winners will work with an ASL Tales Team member for creating the final video for the DVD.

How to apply:
You will need a copy of the book/DVD. Many programs with Deaf students have a copy in their library. If you need a copy for classroom use, specifically for this contest, send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , and we will send you a coupon code to order it at 35% discount.

You may send file.mov, DVD or upload an electronic version directly to our server. Videos should be mailed with the enclosed application form to:

  • You will receive two award plaques: one for your home and one for your school.
  • Winners will be announced on the American Society for Deaf Children*, the Deaf Bilingual Coalition**, and ASL Tales websites.
  • Winning entries will be announced on May 15th.

**The Deaf Bilingual Coalition
“The Deaf Bilingual Coalition promotes the basic human right of all Deaf infants and young children to have access to language through American Sign Language. The DBC campaigns to ensure that the parents of Deaf children are supported by receiving information from qualified Deaf professionals and mentors as early as possible regarding American Sign Language; its excellence in cultivating bilingualism -- ASL and English and its role in cognitive, social, and emotional development. The DBC advocates for optimal programs and schools that are inclusive of ASL and which maximize a Deaf child's potential and inherent dignity as human beings.”
